Keygen is joining the Open Source Pledge

Monday, September 9th 2024

Keygen has been donating and contributing to Open Source for years — since 2021, if my records are correct. Keygen is built on top of large Open Source projects such as Ruby, Rails, and Postgres. But Keygen is also built on top of small Open Source projects. We wouldn't exist without these projects — both big and small.

Because of this, Keygen has consistently contributed back to Open Source — with our team's time, our company's code, and most importantly, our funds:

  • our time by publishing and maintaining Open Source projects such as request_migrations, typed_params, and union_of;
  • our code by contributing our core products to Open Source under DOSP, as well as offering a free Open Source tier at Keygen Cloud; and finally,
  • our funds through financially contributing to various Open Source projects and maintainers.

Today, we're excited to announce that Keygen is joining the Open Source Pledge, furthering our commitment to Open Source by pledging to donate at least $2,000 per-year per-developer at Keygen towards Open Source.

In 2024, we've already donated $5,428 so far.

What is Open Source Pledge?

The Open Source Pledge is an initiative by Sentry to encourage companies to financially commit to Open Source. We all benefit from the vast Open Source ecosystem, and it's time we pay it forward.

The minimum to participate is $2,000 per full-time developer per-year, but we encourage companies to give more if they can.

Our contributions

Below is a breakdown of our contributions since 2021. I'm proud to say we now donate well over $5,000 per-developer annually.

Over time, we've been steadily increasing not just the amount, but also the breadth of our donations, reaching more maintainers in our dependency graph as we grow.

Thank you

To all the Open Source maintainers we depend on: thank you. Keygen wouldn't exist without you. Your work empowers us to build software that serves our customers — software that ultimately feeds our families — and we are forever grateful to you.

thanks.dev will automatically distribute funds to our direct dependency graph, but some projects may not be a direct dependency. If you fall in that category, please get in touch.

If you maintain a dependency of ours and don't have GitHub sponsors set up, please consider setting it up and reaching out to us — we want to donate to you.

If you run a software company, come join us in supporting Open Source.

* Keygen Cloud provides free distribution and auto-upgrade services to Open Source projects through our Open Source tier. The amounts shown represent our egress fees for these projects. Material costs like egress fees are not included in the total.
